Edmunds Elementary Students Win Big in the Local Spelling Contest

On Friday the 7th, the EES Spelling Team came in 1st at the district Spelling Bee. This is the 6th year in a row that EES has won this event. Very Impressive indeed! A big reason for this success has been the support and coaching over the last 9 years of Mrs. Prescott and Mrs. Lamont. Nick B. recently got a chance to sit down with Mrs. Prescott and ask a few questions about the win.

How many kids are on the team?

There are 6 students from EES on the team, all 4th and 5th graders. They are Lena S., Ruby S., Almir K., Isabelle H., Sam H. and Malin H. You select the team based on a written spelling test given to those interested in the 4th and 5th grade. The top 6 scores make the team. “I wish that we could take more kids on the team,” Ms. Prescott said.

How do you prepare the team and how many times do you practice?

We meet twice a week during recess to practice. The team will usually start to practice after the February break.

How does the Spelling Contest actually work?

There are generally 6 teams open to any Burlington school. This year the participants were EES, C.P. Smith, Champlain. Flynn, IAA and Christ the King. There are three matches. There are two teams that com- pete at a time. A team member spells the word out loud and are allowed to ask for a definition and to have the word used in a sentence. If the word is spelled correctly, the team gets 1 point. Each match has four rounds. The team with the most point wins!

What were some of the words that the kids had to spell?

“The toughest word of the day was probably ‘Bronchitis’.” explained Mrs. Prescott.

Who judges the contest?

People from the district – volunteer coordinators.

Have you ever been on a spelling team?

“I don’t remember our school having a spelling team. I do remember winning my class spelling bee in 4th grade. The word was ‘Massachusetts’.”

Help Fight World Hunger

Hello out there! This is Ruby and Allie report- ing from the Edmunds Babbler. Since we had such a successful bake sale for the rainforest, we have decided to move on to a new topic. Our new topic is world hunger.

World hungry is a serious matter. If people can not eat, that’s a problem. What can we do to help? You can give food to a local food shelf, you can donate money to a founda- tion which will buy the food and give it to countries in need, like Haiti, Somalia, Kenya, Mexico and tons of other. Each little step in the right direction can change everything. We need you to help do you part to help others less fortunate then you. Here are a few sites to check out on the internet, with an adult’s permission, to help fight hunger: TheHungerSite.com and FeedingAmerica.org.

To conclude this article, we will ask you to help any way you can. Whatever you decide is okay. Just keep in mind, people in the world need help more than you might think. We would appreciate any help you can offer to tackle this world issue. Thanks so much!

There is this girl in my class who has been repeatedly bullying me all year and not just at school at the boys and girls club too. And if that’s not enough, she has this whole click thing of all these girls who follow

her around and she has gotten them to bully me, also, she has taken my friend and become friends with her now. she bullies me to.

Wow! You are stuck in a pickle.

The best thing you can do now is tell them your feelings and talk to Ms Hathaway, but this is such a big problem. It needs to be taken seriously.

Dear Advice Gals,

I have a really big problem!

My parents told me I have to go to a boarding school! I am so sad! I have to leave all my bffs! It will be for all of middle school and half of high school!

Dear Advice Gals,

I have had a BFF since third grade whom I have always loved and admired. But lately she has been acting really rude, and ignoring me, and I’m pretty sure it’s just because I’m younger, its like, I don’t even know her anymore, And I need my best friend back, I really do. -Anonymous.

Dear Anonymous,

I am sure your friend is not trying to be rude or ignore you and I am sure it is not because you are younger and if she is you might want to end your relationship or just cool down and leave her alone for a while. If you would rather not act so drastically to change your relationship, you could just tell them what’s up or talk to the guidance counselor.

Dear Advice Gals,

I have been having some problems in school and am getting a tutor. I am scared that if people find out about this they will laugh at me and my friends are already making fun of people who need a tutor and I am scared they will bully me about it!

I really need help! – Scared

Dear Scared,

I am sorry about what is happening, but a tutor is the best choice for you! There are many people who need tutors. You’re not the only one out there! If you feel like your friends will bully you, they might not be the best friend choice for you. Try finding a new group of friends who won’t make fun of you.

This Thursday: Edmunds Multicultural Night!

Burlington boasts more cultures than most people know. On Thursday, Edmunds students and parents will get a chance to meet people from those cultures and, even better, taste some great international food!

International Night will take place from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the Edmunds cafeteria, said organizers Autumn Bangoura and Corali Bisbee. Booths will be set up around the room for students and families to learn about a wide range of cultures.

“It is fun to learn about other peoples heritage and foods,” Bangorua said.

Bisbee added: “When I first came to the school, I had an event like this in my mind. I was excited to find out that Señora Bangorua had organized an event last year.”

Represented cultures are likely to include those from Burma, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, Germany, Egypt, Vietnam and the native American Abenaki culture, the organizers said.

Students will enter the cafeteria and get a passport to discover the world represented within the cafeteria, they said.

Last year, about 100 people attended the event, Bangorua and Bisbee said they expecting twice as many this year.

Last year, “everyone seemed to have fun,” Bangorua said. “They (were) very excited, seeing all the bright colors and wonderful smells. The parents were very proud to represent their heritage. Some parents were very proud to wear their traditional clothes.”

Anyone wanting to come dressed in a way that represents his or her culture is welcome to do so this year as well, she said.
